[BUNJANG] The Cage of Freedom / 자유

In this artwork, I have depicted a 'birdcage' in place of a human head. Within this cage, another bird is trapped.

People universally desire to escape their current constraints (the cage) and achieve absolute freedom. However, the world beyond the depicted cage (i.e., the human body and its surroundings) might represent another, larger societal framework. Within this, we live bound by invisible threads of numerous rules, relationships, and responsibilities.

Ultimately, what I sought to question is: "Does 'complete' freedom truly exist for humanity?"

The small cage above the head, which we perceive as our confinement, and the outer world we believe to be free, might merely be different scales of the same encompassing world.

It would be ideal if opening the cage door led to a world without further barriers, but reality often proves otherwise. So, what should we do? Should we struggle relentlessly only to encounter another wall, or should we accept the rules within this wall and find peace therein?

Through the image of the bird within the cage yearning to open its door, I wished to convey the endless dilemma of choice and the fate of humankind.

저는 이 그림에서 사람의 머리 대신 '새장'을 그려 넣었습니다. 그리고 그 새장 안에는 또 한 마리의 새가 갇혀 있습니다.
​사람들은 모두 지금의 구속(새장)에서 벗어나 완전한 자유를 얻고 싶어 합니다. 하지만 그림 속 새장 너머의 세상(즉, 사람의 몸과 주변)은 또 다른, 더 거대한 사회라는 틀일 수 있습니다. 우리는 그 안에서도 수많은 규칙과 관계, 책임이라는 보이지 않는 줄에 묶여 살아갑니다.

​결국 제가 묻고 싶었던 것은 이것입니다. "인간에게 과연 '완전한' 자유란 존재하는가?"

​우리가 갇혀 있다고 생각하는 이 머리 위의 작은 새장과, 우리가 자유라고 믿는 그 바깥 세상은 크기만 다를 뿐, 우리를 둘러싼 하나의 같은 세계일지 모릅니다.

​새장 문을 연다고 해서 그 너머에 또 다른 벽이 없다면 좋겠지만, 현실은 그렇지 않을 때가 많습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요. 끝까지 발버둥 쳐서 또 다른 벽에 부딪혀 볼 것인가, 아니면 이 벽 안의 룰을 받아들이고 그 안에서 평화를 찾을 것인가.

​그림 속 새장 문을 열고 싶어 하는 새의 모습에서, 그 끝없는 선택의 고민과 인간의 운명에 대해 이야기하고 싶었습니다.
