This is a 1981 4th edition of 'Once Upon a Time Long Ago' by Lee Chang-woo (李彰雨).

[About the Book]

Lee Chang-woo was the chairman of the Jese Group. He was an ambitious young man who joined a Swiss multinational corporation in the early 1970s, located in the tallest building in South Korea at the time. Despite having a dream job with top-tier salary and working conditions, conflicts arose, leading to a labor dispute. The company's demand was: 'Do not express national superiority.' He was fired after assaulting a company representative.

With a substantial severance package, he founded 'Jese Industries' in April 1974, renting a closed salt warehouse in a remote area of Mapo and purchasing a used shelf. After a few years in the machinery parts processing business, he established an office and registered for trading in August 1977. Riding the wave of Middle Eastern exports, he achieved an export performance of ten million dollars within four months of founding the company. At the time, he was called an 'enfant terrible' (a terrifying child threatening the chaebols) alongside companies like 'Won Industries', 'Yulsan', and 'Daebong Group'.

He expanded into the shipping industry by purchasing container ships from Japan and sequentially acquired 'Ssangmi Textile', 'Jinyeong Electronics', and 'Daesung Construction', forming the Jese Group. His last acquisition was 'Daehan Jeonchuk', a prominent mid-sized construction company that had collapsed due to tax evasion allegations, to enter the Middle Eastern construction market. This venture promised a profit of 400 million dollars if successful.

The day after the acquisition, Daehan Jeonchuk's overseas construction license was revoked. The reason for the company's acquisition disappeared, leaving behind massive debt. Jese, facing a financial crisis, requested bailout funds, but all were rejected, and the company went bankrupt due to an inability to cover a 11 million won check.

The downfall of the successful company was widely covered by the media, with articles labeling him a 'fraudster who falsely exported stones instead of cement.' The atmosphere dramatically shifted, and in October 1978, he was arrested, sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension of execution, and released. Jese Industries disintegrated.

In 1981, he published a book titled 'Once Upon a Time Long Ago,' filled with scathing, vitriolic curses and vulgar language directed at politicians, business leaders, and especially newspaper reporters in South Korea. The cover featured a photo of himself being led away in handcuffs, and the book became a bestseller.

The writings, like a rhythmic folk song, were even adapted into a play at the time.

[책 소개]

이창우는 제세그룹의 회장이었습니다.
1970년대 초, 대한민국 최고층 빌딩에 입주한 스위스계 다국적기업에 입사한 패기만만한 젊은이었습니다. 당시 최고 수준의 봉급과 근무환경을 갖춘 꿈의 직장에도 갈등이 있었고 노동쟁의에 들어갑니다. '(사측) 민족적 우월성을 나타내지 말 것'. 사측 사람에게 주먹을 날리고 직장에서 잘립니다.

두둑한 퇴직금을 받은 그는 1974년 4월, 마포 어느 촌구석에 폐업한 소금창고를 빌려서 중고 선반을 한 대 사다가 놓고 창업을 합니다. 회사 이름 '제세산업'이었습니다.

기계부품 가공사업을 몇 년 하다가 사무실을 차리고 1977년 8월 무역업 등록을 하고 중동 수출바람에 힘입어 창업 4개월만에 천만 달러라는 수출실적을 올렸습니다. 당시 '원기업', '율산', '대봉그룹' 등과 함께 '앙팡테리블' (재벌을 위협하는 무서운 아이들)로 불렸습니다.

일본에서 컨테이너 선박을 사서 해운업에 진출하고 '쌍미섬유', '진영전자', '대성건설'을 차례로 인수해 제세그룹이 됩니다.

마지막 인수한 기업은 중동 건설시장 진출을 위해 탈세 혐의로 무너진 유수의 중견 건설업체, '대한전척'이었습니다. 당시 이란의 테헤란 외곽의 신도시 건설에 참여하기 위해서였는데 성공하면 4억 달러를 버는 건수였습니다.

인수한 다음 날 대한전척의 해외 건설면허가 취소됩니다. 거금을 끌어모아 회사를 인수한 이유가 사라져버렸고 막대한 부채만 남았습니다. 자금난에 빠진 제세는 구제금융을 요청했지만 모두 거절당하고 천백만 원 수표를 막지 못해 부도를 맞습니다.
 
잘 나가던 기업의 추락에 언론들은 기사를 때렸습니다. '시멘트 대신에 돌멩이를 위장수출한 사기꾼'. 분위기는 급변해서 1978년 10월, 그는 구속되었고 징역 1년, 집행유예 2년을 받고 풀려납니다. 제세산업은 공중분해되었습니다.

1981년 그는 대한민국 정, 재계, 특히 신문사 기자를 상대로 신랄한 막말 독설 저주와 육두문자를 넣어 '옛날 옛날 한 옛날'이라는 제목의 책을 냈습니다. 표지사진은 자신이 수갑차고 끌려가는 장면을 넣었는데 이게 베스트 셀러가 됩니다. [출처] 딴지일보
