Description
This is a Buncheong celadon vase featuring a peony (or possibly magnolia) design by Master Jwabong Kim Eung-han, recognized as Gyeonggi Province's first and South Korea's first master potter.
Known as a first-generation ceramic artist, his works are rarely seen despite his fame.
He is the eldest of the three ceramic artist brothers: Jwabong, Mukjeon, and Hancheong, and is known as the eternal master potter.
The piece is a Buncheong ceramic with a white porcelain feel. While introduced as a peony design, the representation of branches and stems suggests it could also be interpreted as a magnolia design.
The flowers are rendered in underglaze red (Jinsa) on the Buncheong, creating a simple yet elegant aesthetic rather than overt flamboyance. The branches are depicted using iron brown (Cheolhwa).
Dimensions are: Height 28.5cm * Maximum Width 21cm.
Includes the artist's signature and his signed wooden box. The signature on the box appears to be directly applied by Master Jwabong himself. Inside the box, the acquisition date by the previous owner is noted as the 63rd year of the Showa era (1988).
