Description
This is a Song Dynasty Yingqingyao vase featuring a peony and arabesque motif. The name Yingqing (影靑), meaning 'shadow blue,' reflects the glaze's resemblance to shadows. Characterized by its transparent, jade-like luster, the celadon glaze is exceptionally clear.
The peony and arabesque pattern is rendered using a bas-relief technique. The deeply carved areas exhibit a 'pooling' effect, making the patterns appear three-dimensional. The vase boasts a delicate and elegant form.
Its surface is remarkably smooth with a pleasing sheen. Natural crackling ('kaipian' or crazing) is visible, and the foot displays a 'fire-stone red' (Hwaseokhong) due to the firing process. The piece also shows natural patina from prolonged use or storage, adding to its historical charm.
