### Interpretation of the Mobile Suit

The RX-78-2 is a mobile suit that excels in fundamentals rather than relying on elaborate equipment. Its balanced proportions and solid silhouette convey a powerful presence without needing excessive ornamentation.

This repaint stays true to the original color scheme while reinterpreting it through the lens of cel-shading and volumetric effects seen in anime. Particular attention was paid to the flow of light and shadow to ensure the face, chest, and shield remain focal points, even on the compact SD frame. Multiple adjustments were made to the shading to achieve this.

### Production Notes

The panel lining was the most time-consuming aspect. Achieving depth with white and panel lines requires more than just bright application; it involves carefully defining the lines with etching tools before applying color. Layers of blue and grey shading were meticulously applied to create a natural transition reminiscent of anime cel animation. The shield, rather than being a flat red, features layered shading to give it depth, and the black outlines are finished to mimic the crisp lines of hand-drawn animation.

Given the small scale of the SD proportions, even a slight overemphasis on shading could disrupt the overall impression. Therefore, considerable time was spent on post-completion adjustments to maintain balance.

### Work Process

Repainting is far more than simply applying new paint over an existing layer. It involves disassembly, surface preparation, priming, and a complete re-application of paint. Both airbrushing and hand-brush techniques are employed to build up shading and highlights in stages. Before final clear coating, the colors were meticulously checked under both natural and LED lighting to ensure overall balance.

Each piece typically takes about a month to complete, with revisions and drying often consuming more time than the actual painting.

Professional-grade paints from brands such as Gaia Notes, Mr.Color (GSI Creos), Tamiya, Vallejo, and Finisher's Paint were used. Surface preparation utilized Mr.Surfacer, and the final finish was achieved with matte or semi-gloss clear coats tailored to the desired aesthetic. While execution is paramount, reliable materials and equipment were essential for a stable, high-quality result.

### One-off Artwork

Every creation is unique. Even if tasked with replicating the same SD First Gundam, an identical piece cannot be produced. The brushstrokes, shading intensity, color mixing, and cel-line thickness are all human decisions. Consequently, each completed artwork is treated not merely as a custom build but as a singular, independent creation.

퍼스트 건담은 수많은 건담 시리즈의 시작이자, 지금까지도 가장 상징적인 기체 중 하나입니다.

시간이 흘러 다양한 디자인과 화려한 기체들이 등장했지만, RX-78-2가 가진 단순하면서도 완성도 높은 실루엣은 여전히 많은 사람들에게 '건담'이라는 이름을 가장 먼저 떠올리게 합니다.

이번 작업은 단순히 오래된 키트를 새것처럼 만드는 것이 아니라, SD 특유의 귀여운 비율 안에서도 퍼스트 건담이 가진 존재감과 무게감을 표현하는 것을 목표로 했습니다.

기체 해석
RX-78-2는 화려한 장비보다 기본기에 충실한 기체입니다.

과장된 장식 없이도 균형 잡힌 비례와 단단한 실루엣만으로 강한 존재감을 보여주는 디자인이라고 생각합니다.

이번 리페인트 역시 원작의 컬러를 크게 벗어나지 않는 범위에서, 애니메이션에서 보이는 셀 명암과 입체감을 중심으로 다시 해석했습니다.

특히 SD 특유의 작은 크기에서도 얼굴과 흉부, 방패가 가장 먼저 눈에 들어오도록 명암의 흐름을 여러 차례 수정했습니다.

제작 노트

가장 오래 작업한 부분은 먹선 입니다.
흰색과 먹선은 단순히 밝게 칠한다고 입체감이 살아나는 색이 아닙니다.
조각도를 이용해서 그선을 조금더 명확하게 만들고 그 위에 채색을 입히죠.

푸른 계열의 그림자와 회색 음영을 여러 번 겹쳐 올려, 애니메이션 셀 도색 특유의 선명한 명암이 자연스럽게 이어질 수 있도록 작업했습니다.

방패 역시 단순한 빨간색이 아닌 여러 단계의 명암을 사용해 평면적으로 보이지 않도록 표현했으며, 검은 라인은 실제 셀 애니메이션처럼 형태를 또렷하게 잡아주는 역할을 하도록 마감했습니다.

작은 SD 비율에서는 명암 하나만 과해져도 전체 인상이 무너지기 때문에, 완성 후에도 여러 차례 수정하며 균형을 맞췄습니다.

작업 과정

리페인트는 단순히 기존 도색 위에 색을 덧입히는 작업이 아닙니다.

분해 후 표면 정리와 프라이밍을 거쳐 전체 도색을 처음부터 다시 진행하고, 에어브러시와 붓 작업을 병행하며 명암과 하이라이트를 단계적으로 쌓아 올립니다.

마감 전에는 자연광과 LED 조명 아래에서 각각 색감을 확인하며 전체 밸런스를 다시 조정했습니다.

한 작품을 완성하는 데 평균 약 한 달이 소요되며, 작업보다 수정과 건조에 더 많은 시간이 들어가는 경우도 많습니다.

그래서 완성된 작품 하나하나를 단순한 커스텀이 아니라 하나의 독립된 결과물로 생각하며 작업하고 있습니다.
