However, following the discovery of sophisticated counterfeit 5,000 won notes (the '77246' notes) in 2005 and the increasing international status of the Korean Won necessitating the use of Roman alphabet serial numbers, the Bank of Korea issued new 5,000 won notes in 2006 and new 1,000 won and 10,000 won notes in 2007, marking the end of this series.

2000년부터 발행개시된 (마) 만원권은 기존 구권의 디자인적 측면을 계승하면서도 내부적으로는 당시의 최신 위조방지기술을 집약한 지폐였습니다.

이러한 변화는 당시 컬러복사기와 정교한 위조기술의 발전에 대응하기 위한 것이었습니다. 주요 변화로 색변환잉크와 돌출은화가 새롭게 적용되고, 부분노출은선이 개선되었으며 숨은그림의 크기도 확대되어 위조 방지를 도모합니다.
