[BUNJANG] Late Joseon Dynasty Horsehair Manggeon / 민속품 구한말 전후 말총 망건

This Manggeon is crafted from horsehair from the late Joseon Dynasty and its preceding period.

Manggeon is a type of headwear worn by adult males in the Joseon Dynasty to keep their hair in place when tying a topknot. It is a net-like headband worn from the forehead to the back of the head.

It was an essential item worn before donning a gat (traditional Korean hat) or tanggeon (a type of hat worn indoors). It was primarily made by weaving horsehair or human hair into a net-like structure.

The Manggeon consists of the dang (a drawstring for tightening the top), the pyeonja (a reinforcing band at the bottom), and the forehead band.

This particular Manggeon was collected from within a Joseon Dynasty bandaji (a type of chest) along with old Joseon books.

While marked as late Joseon to its preceding period, its origin can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty itself.

There seems to be a growing popularity for such folk artifacts recently.

Regarding its condition, there are a few small holes visible due to the passage of time.

The approximate size is 20cm in width and 15cm in height.

구한말 전후 말총으로 제작한 망건입니다.
망건은 조선 시대 성인 남성들이 상투를 틀 때 머리카락이 흘러내리지 않도록 이마에서 뒤통수까지 두르는 그물 모양의 머리띠입니다.
갓이나 탕건을 쓰기 전 필수적으로 착용했던 의관의 일종으로 주로 말총이나 사람의 머리카락을 엮어 그물처럼 만들었습니다.
윗부분을 졸라매는 당(살춤) 아랫부분의 편자 이마를 감싸는 앞 뒷머리를 싸매는 뒤로 구성됩니다.
본 망건은 조선시대의 반닫이 안에 조선의 고서와 함께 있던것을 수집하였습니다.
구한말 전후로 표기했지만 조선시대까지 올라갈수 있습니다.
최근 이러한 만속품의 인기가 올라가는듯 합니다.
상태는 세월의 흐름에 구멍이 몇군데 보입니다.
크기는 폭 20 높이 15 정도입니다.
