**About the Author:**

Kim Choong-ryul was born in 1931 in Wonju, Gangwon Province, into a family of traditional scholars. After participating in the Korean War, he pursued higher education in Taiwan on a national scholarship, earning his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from National Taiwan University. He completed his Ph.D. at Chinese Culture University in 1974.

He began his academic career as an associate professor of Chinese philosophy at Chinese Culture University in 1968, and later became a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Korea University in 1970, where he served until 1996. His extensive scholarship encompassed Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, significantly contributing to the advancement of Eastern philosophy studies in Korea. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Korea and received the Seokryu Award.

1931년 강원도 원주시 문막읍의 한학자 집안에서 태어나 강원도에서 원주농고를 졸업한 뒤 6.25전쟁에 참여하였다. 1956년 국가장학생으로 대만에 유학하여 국립대만대학에서 학사·석사 학위를 받았고, 1974년 중국문화대학에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 박사 학위과정을 마친 뒤 1968년 중국문화대학에서 부교수로 중국철학을 강의하였으며, 1970년 고려대학교 철학과 교수가 되어 1996년까지 재직하였다.

한국의 동양철학자·교육자이다. 유교·도교·불교 등 동양사상을 두루 섭렵하여 한국의 동양철학 수준을 향상시켰으며, 대한민국학술원 회원을 지냈다. 석류장을 받았고, 《유가의 윤리》《동양사상산고》《노장철학강의》 등의 저서를 남겼다
